Het drinkwater bij de Lotus Family zit vol ijzer. Zo vol dat het regelmatig bruin van kleur is. Niet echt lekker om te drinken en ook niet gezond. En als je jezelf of je kleren er in wast, worden beiden niet echt schoon.

Met de aanschaf en installatie van een filterinstallatie is dat probleem verholpen. Het water is beter van kwaliteit, de was wordt echt schoon en jij zelf ook. Dat is beter voor iedereen.

NB in de Lotus Family drinken ze gebotteld water uit dezelfde installaties die je ook veel ziet in westerse bedrijven. Met van die grote blauwe flessen. Deze oplossing werkt hier (in tegenstelling tot in het CHC weeshuis) wel, omdat er constant toezicht is door volwassenen, die toezien op goed gebruik van de installatie.

The drinking water of the Lotus Family is full of iron. So full that it turns brown on a regular basis. Not really tasty and also not very healthy. And when you wash yourself or your clothes in it, both won’t be clean.

With the installation of the water filter, this problem is solved. The water is of better quality, the washing will be spotless and so will you be. That is better for everyone.

NB in the Lotus Family they drink bottled water from the same machine that you see in many Western companies. With those big blue bottles. This solution works out fine at the Hope Foundation (unlike at the CHC orphanage) because there is constant adult supervision to guarantee the proper use of the equipment.

Begin augustus start het nieuwe schooljaar in Nepal. Tijdens de vaak lange dagen eten de kinderen ook een warme maaltijd op school. Bij verschillende scholen is die service inbegrepen in het schoolgeld, maar niet bij allemaal. Voor hen die op scholen zitten waar de lunch niet is inbegrepen, betaalt 4SmilingFaces dit schooljaar hun lunch of wel tiffin. Het gaat om 18 kinderen.

Early August is the start of the new school year in Nepal. During the often long days, the children eat a hot meal at school. At several schools, this service is included in the school fees, but not everywhere. For those who are in schools where lunch is not included, 4 Smiling Faces pays their lunch/tiffin money. We need to do this for 18 kids.

Behalve de voorgeschreven schooluniformen en house dresses hebben de kinderen ook voorgeschreven schoolschoenen nodig. En bij opgroeiende kinderen moeten die nogal eens worden vernieuwd. Dit jaar zorgt 4 Smiling Faces daar dus voor.

In addition to the prescribed school uniforms and housedresses, the children also have to have prescribed school shoes. And with growing children, those need to be renewed from time to time. This year, 4 Smiling Faces will provide those.

4 Smiling Faces heeft drie akoestische gitaren aangeschaft voor de kinderen van de Lotus Family Foundation. In het tehuis wordt veel aandacht besteed aan muziek, zang en dans. Het was een grote wens van de Lotus-kinderen om – net als Iman (die het tehuis runt met zijn vrouw Bini) – gitaar te leren spelen. Nu kan die wens eindelijk in vervulling gaan.

4  SmilingFaces has bought three acoustic guitars for the children of the Lotus Family Foundation. In this home, they make a lot of music, song, and dance. It was the great wish of Lotus-children to learn to play the guitar, just like Iman, who runs the home together with his wife Bini. Now this wish had been granted.

Meisjes hebben dingen nodig waar jongens zonder kunnen: beha’s, maandverband en zo. Ze worden geacht daarvoor zelf te zorgen, maar door de aardbevingen hebben lang niet alle kinderen beschikking over (zak)geld om dergelijke zaken zelf aan te schaffen en zonder kunnen ze niet.  Dus krijgen ze deze keer alles van  4 Smiling Faces.

Girls need stuff boys can do without: bras, sanitary towels, and that sort of thing. Normally they have to take care of that themselves, but because of the earthquakes, many kids have little or no access to (pocket)money. So that is where 4SmilingFaces steps in and provides all that is necessary.

De kinderen van het NWCSS weeshuis hebben allerlei spullen nodig, voor school, voor in het tehuis, voor hygiëne en nog veel meer. Deze keer is de eer aan 4 Smiling Faces om daarin te voorzien.

Als gevolg van gebrek aan supervisie door volwassenen, gaan de kinderen hier sneller door hun spullen heen als bijvoorbeeld in de DRC. Kun je hen nauwelijks de schuld van geven; ligt aan de organisatie.

Als de kinderen niet de juiste spullen hebben op school, lopen ze bovendien de kans op pesterijen of sociale uitsluiting, een gevaar dat voor tehuiskinderen sowieso een realiteit is.

Het leiderschap van het tehuis kunnen wij niet zomaar veranderen, al doen we daartoe altijd ons best. Dit keer lijkt er door de aardbevingen wel een positieve verandering te zijn, maar of die beklijft zal de toekomst moeten leren. Nepal is typisch zo’n land waar je de dingen eerst moet zien om ze te kunnen geloven; afwachten dus en hopen voor het beste.

The children of the NWCSS orphanage need all kinds of stuff, for school, for in the home, for hygiene, and much more. This time, the honor to provide all these things falls to 4 Smiling Faces.

Due to lack of adult supervision, the NWCSS children lose or break their stuff faster than in for example in the DRC. You can’t really blame them for that. Blame the leadership.

If the children do not have the right stuff at school, they run the risk of harassment or social exclusion, a real danger facing children living in orphanages anyway.

We can’t change the leadership of the home, even though we keep trying to make positive changes. This time due to the earthquakes they seem to be making good progress, but whether that will last remains to be seen. Nepal is a typical country for seeing is believing…let’s hope for the best.

In 2014 4SmilingFaces realised an excise/study room on the ground floor of the DRC. Due to the earthquakes in 2015, the roof of the room was badly damaged, which we restored immediately.

Now it’s time for a modest update: installing railings along all walls of the room. This way, children who have difficulty walking can make better use of the space and do exercises while standing up. That benefits their physical development.

In 2014 heeft 4 Smiling Faces een oefen/studie ruimte gebouwd op de begane grond van de DRC. Bij de aardbevingen in 2015 is het dak van de ruimte zwaar beschadigd en dat hebben we natuurlijk onmiddellijk hersteld.

Nu is het tijd voor een bescheiden update: het aanbrengen van railings langs alle wanden van de ruimte. Op die manier kunnen kinderen die slecht ter been zijn de ruimte beter gebruiken en ook oefeningen doen terwijl ze staan. Dat komt hun lichamelijke ontwikkeling ten goede.

In 2010 4SmilingFaces constructed a groundwater well and pump in the DRC so costly and irregularly supplied drinking water is used only for food and drink. Ever since then things like taking a shower, doing washing, flushing the toilets, and so on are done with groundwater coming from the mountains.

Up to now, we used an in-water pump at the bottom of the deep well, but that is irreparably damaged by the earthquakes and hundreds of aftershocks and must be replaced. 4SmilingFaces will supply a new pump which will be housed next to the well. This pump is of better quality, easier, and safer to maintain and repair. This job will be done at the start of the dry season at the beginning of October.
