In 2015 4SmilingFaces got an old but still good functioning Apple laptop from a friend of a friend who was leaving KTM. She wanted it to be put to good use, since it was still in good working order.
I accepted it to give to a few of the students in our scholarship program to aid their study efforts. And they use it all the time. So much so, that the laptop’s battery now has completely died of old age.
The solution is to have a completely new battery installed, which we happily pay for.
Het is weer die tijd van het jaar: het belangrijkste Hindoe festival Dashain gaat beginnen. Traditiegetrouw krijgen kinderen in Nepal met Dashain nieuwe kleren. Voor het NWCSS weeshuis is dat altijd al een moeilijke traditie om in stand te houden, maar dit jaar helemaal. Al het beschikbare geld is nodig voor de herbouw/renovatie als gevolg van de aardbevingen die onvoorstelbare schade hebben aangericht.
Zie hier de taak voor 4SmilingFaces. Alle NWCSS kinderen worden geheel in het nieuw gestoken. Niet alleen omdat het traditie is, maar vooral ook omdat ze die echt nodig hebben. Het behoeft geen uitleg dat opgroeiende kinderen geregeld nieuwe kleren nodig hebben en als we daarmee een belangrijke traditie ere houden: Top!
It’s that time of year again: the main Hindu festival Dashain start soon. Traditionally at Dashain children in Nepal get new clothes. For NWCSS orphanage this has always been a difficult tradition to maintain, but specially this year. All the available money is needed for the reconstruction/renovation needed to repair all the damage done by the earthquakes that have caused unimaginable damage.
So, this is a task for 4SmilingFaces. All the NWCSS children will get all new clothes. Not only because it is tradition, but specially because they really need them. It goes without saying that growing children need new clothes regularly and if by doing that we also honour an important tradition: Great!
Drinkwater in Kathmandu is altijd een uitdaging. Ten eerste is er de gebrekkige en onregelmatige levering. Soms komt er twee weken lang geen vers drinkwater. Daarom hebben vrijwel alle huizen een of meerdere grote zwarte watervoorraadtanks op het dak staan. Ten tweede is er het probleem met de waterdruk. Als er water wordt geleverd, vult iedereen tegelijk zijn/haar water tanks. Dat geeft uiteraard weer problemen met de waterdruk.
Los daarvan is de kwaliteit van het drinkwater altijd een bron van zorg. In het KTM drinkwater zit een bacterie die ziekten veroorzaakt. Veel Nepali zijn er min of meer immuun voor, maar voor buitenlanders is het echt beter om het drinkwater niet te consumeren. Het drinken van gebotteld water is zwaar aan te bevelen.
In Nepal gebruiken velen dezelfde gebotteld water machines die je hier ook veel ziet in bedrijven. Met die grote blauwe flessen. Deze oplossing is echter kostbaar en arbeidsintensief. Voor het NWCSS weeshuis blijkt het ook niet echt de oplossing, omdat de machines snel kapot gaan.
Veel bedrijven en instellingen in Nepal gebruiken daarom een waterfilterinstallatie. Die maakt het drinkwater schoner, maar nog niet schoon genoeg voor buitenlanders. Voor de Nepali lijkt het echter wel een goed alternatief, want zij zijn heel wat gewend en het is sowieso beter dan niets.
Daarom heeft 4SmilingFaces het bestaande filter systeem gerepareerd nadat het is beschadigd door de aardbevingen. Wetend dat het niet de perfecte oplossing is, maar dit is op dit moment de minst slecht optie, omdat:
er nu een meer betrouwbare drinkwatervoorziening nodig is om verdere ziektes, infecties en uitdroging te voorkomen
het huidige systeem wordt door vele instellingen in Nepal gebruikt
dit is wat werkt in Nepal en waar mensen aan zijn gewend
de kinderen drinken daardoor in het weeshuis voortaan schoon en bacterievrij drinkwater. Buiten de deur drinken ze helaas nog het huidige imperfecte drinkwater waar ze nog steeds ziek van kunnen worden. Daarom adviseren wij ook om onderweg van huis uit meegenomen water te drinken.
Drinking water in Kathmandu is always a challenge. First, there is the inadequate and irregular supply. Sometimes there will be no fresh drinking water for 2 weeks. Therefore, almost all the houses have one or more black water tanks on the roof.
Secondly, there is the problem with the water pressure. If water is supplied, everyone fills his/her water tanks all at once. Obviously this causes problems with the water pressure.
Separately, the quality of drinking water has always been a source of concern. The KTM drinking water is bacteria in it that causes disease. Many Nepali there are more or less immune to those, but for foreigners it is really better to avoid them. Drinking bottled water is heavily recommended.
In Nepal, many people use the same bottled water machines that you can also see in many companies in the west. With those big blue bottles. However, this solution is costly and labor intensive. They turned out to be not the best solution for the NWCSS orphanage, because the machines easily break.
Many companies and institutions in Nepal use a water filter system which makes the water cleaner, but not clean enough for foreigners. For the Nepali it seems to be a reasonable alternative, because they are used to it and it is a lot better than nothing.
Therefore 4SmilingFaces has repaired the existing filter system after it has been damaged by the earthquakes. Knowing that it is not the perfect solution, but it is currently the least bad option, because:
they need a reliable supply of drinking water now to prevent further diseases, infections and dehydration
the current system is used by many institutions in Nepal
this is what works in Nepal, what people are used to
if the children in the orphanage drink perfectly clean and bacteria-free water while elsewhere in the country the are still using the current imperfect filter system, they will still become ill after drinking that and that doesn’t help.
School children in Nepal wear school uniforms. Besides the formal uniforms, there are the house dresses. No dresses, but an informal version of a school uniform. Often it is a tracksuit and T-shirt.
The availability of a house dress gives the kids a choice in what to wear to school. So there is less to wash and less wear and tear. But the important thing is that the kids love to be able to have the option of wearing their house dress. They will totally fit in and that is something we want for them.
Schoolgaande kinderen in Nepal dragen schooluniformen. Naast de formele uniformen, zijn er de zogenaamde house dresses. Geen jurken, maar een informele versie van een schooluniform. Vaak is het een trainingspak met t-shirt.
De beschikking over een house dress maakt dat kinderen niet alle dagen hun formele uniform hoeven te dragen. Dus minder was en slijtage. Maar het belangrijkste is dat de kinderen het geweldig vinden om ook house dresses te kunnen dragen. Dan horen ze er helemaal bij en dat gun je hen toch.
The new school year in Nepal starts in early August. During the often long days the children of course have to eat well. At schools attended by the orphanage kids, don’t have lunch service included in the tuition fees. Therefore, they have to bring their own lunch to school. Money is needed to make that possible and this year this is paid for by 4SmilingFaces. It involves all 30 children.
Begin augustus start het nieuwe schooljaar in Nepal. Tijdens de vaak lange dagen moeten de kinderen uiteraard goed eten. Op de scholen waar de weeshuiskinderen naar toe gaan, is deze service niet inbegrepen in het schoolgeld. Daarom krijgen ze lunch mee. Daarvoor is geld nodig en dit jaar wordt dat betaald door 4SmilingFaces. Het gaat om alle 30 kinderen.
