4 Smiling Faces

It happened again 😰

This time, it occurred not far from the area struck by the disaster on August 26. Another sudden surge of water occurred; following a suspected landslide that temporarily blocked a river, a massive volume of water, mud, and debris suddenly rushed down into the Budhi Gandaki River. Livestock sheds were swept away, herds of animals vanished into the water, and several villages have been severely affected. The exact cause is still under investigation.

Preliminary reports indicate that more than 35 houses have been washed away and several bridges have collapsed, including a key bridge connecting Gorkha and Dhading. Four people remain missing. Six people were rescued with the help of the army. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed. Authorities are warning people living along the river to move to higher ground.

The affected area lies close to Dhading, which was hard hit by the disaster on August 26. It is also an area frequented by trekkers. Warnings regarding further flooding remain fully in effect, and the situation could change rapidly.

Food aid (1)

Prices in KTM are rising due to the flash flood disaster of August 26. When you have little or nothing, making ends meet is always; rising prices turn that into a catastrophe. Almost all the children attending the SHCOP after-school program come from families scarred by the 2015 earthquakes—families that lost parents, siblings and/or their homes. Having started over in the big city, the children are looked after at SHCOP after school until their parents come to collect them following a long day of hard and heavy work, often in low-paying jobs.

These families always face hardship, but the situation is especially difficult right now. Thanks to numerous donations (for which we are incredibly grateful 🙏🏽), 4 Smiling Faces was able to help them with a well-stocked food parcel containing items such as rice, lentils, oil, eggs, potatoes, and vegetables.

In the newpaper

Was interviewed bij a local newspaper. (Sorry, it’s only in Dutch, but you probarbly get the drift) Naturally, for my children in Nepal, and especially to emphasize that the consequences of the disaster extend far beyond the borders of the disaster zone. Please, keep helping; Nepal and the Nepalese people desperately need our support now and in the future.

Bright spots

These are difficult times for Nepal, and especially for the Nepalese. The tsunami disaster has damaged, swept away, and/or destroyed so much: people, homes, businesses, schools, villages, infrastructure… more than a week later, the human suffering and all forms of damage are still barely comprehensible. Amidst all the misery, one could almost forget that beautiful things are still happening; survivors are still being found (https://nos.nl/l/2629604). People who were reported missing without knowing it are being found. Or the school principal who, through decisive action, was able to bring all his students and staff to safety in time (https://nos.nl/l/2629162). That gives hope these days.

That is exactly what we at 4 Smiling Faces do for the children and the people around them whom we have been supporting in Nepal for years. With some help from us, they get so much further, now more than ever. For although they fortunately live outside the disaster area, they certainly feel the consequences of it. Food shortages are increasing, prices are rising, and people are losing their jobs because roads leading to the disaster area are closed. 4 Smiling Faces wants to stand alongside them and help, even now. Will you help us help them?

Lichtpuntjes

Thorn back in time

The flash flood in Nepal is setting the country back completely. After more than 10 years of the devastating earthquakes of 2015 and the pandemic, it seemed the country and its people were finally getting back on the road to recovery… Wednesday’s tidal wave is a brutal reset back in time. 😥 Many have drowned. Villages have been wiped out. Farmland is flooded. Infrastructure is irreparably damaged. The social and economic consequences are enormous, in the short and long term.

A disaster like this has unimaginable consequences for the immediate victims, but also for the rest of the country. The supply of food to cities is cutting off. Tourism revenue is disappearing. Businesses are going bankrupt. People are becoming unemployed. The cycle of poverty and despair is growing ever larger, suffocating and destroying.

4 Smiling Faces cannot help everyone, but we all can help someone. It is now more important than ever to reach out a helping hand. This can be done on a one-off basis, but given the scale of the disaster, long-term aid is at least as important. Because this isn’t going to be over just like that; this is going to last for years. By making a recurring donation to 4 Smiling Faces, you are that outstretched hand our children in Nepal so desperately need. With your donation, you don’t just make an impact — you support, help, and offer comfort during difficult times. 🩷

Landbouwgrond is verzopen. Infrastructuur onherstelbaar beschadigd.

Our superpower

Providing immediate emergency aid in the disaster zone is the strength and expertise of major charities and government bodies. Our “superpower” lies in supporting the children, the people around them, and the homes where they grow up in the Kathmandu Valley. Although they were not directly struck by the devastating floods, many still live in fear regarding the fate of family and friends with whom contact has not yet been re-established.

Disasters like this never affect only the immediate victims; they also cause despair and misery far beyond the disaster zone—both in the short and long term. The staggering rise in prices alone makes life for Nepal’s predominantly poor population far more difficult than it already was. That is why we ask for your continued support—now and in the future—so that we can help them and offer hope. Knowing that people in the distant Netherlands have not forgotten them provides a real source of comfort and encouragement to the children and our staff on the ground.

It doesn’t matter what you give, but that you give—because OUR CHILDREN CANNOT AFFORD HUNGER! All donations are welcome and gratefully received.
