The 4 Smiling Faces Foundation helps young people who have to leave the children’s homes we support (DRC Nepal and NWCSS orphanage) because:

• they reach 18 years of age and are legally adults,
• finished high school,
• may have a physical handicap or illness.

Our help consists of a scholarship (for school fees, uniforms, shoes, books, school materials, and tiffin) and if necessary the rent for a safe place to live. We only help those who can’t rely on family (which is the norm in Nepal) and have no safety net to support them towards an independent life.

Even though Nepal is one of the worlds poorest countries, getting a further education after your School Leaving Certificate is not cheap. Especially considering the very low wages. We think this is the only way to help these youngsters get a good start in life.

4 Smiling Faces wants to do everything in its power to give these young people a chance for a better life, prevent forced marriages; forced labour, and (sexual) slavery. These are all real dangers in Nepal.

The only way out is a good education, so the youngsters can build their own lives, make their own choices and so doing, break the circle of poverty and despair. This goes especially for kids that are ill, have a handicap, and/or any other difficulties (like poverty, abandonment, addiction, etc).

Recipients can’t apply for our help; thanks to inside connections, we know exactly who needs our help. We have a system in place for monitoring their progress. Also, no money goes to either the recipients and/or their families: all money-related matters are dealt with by our very trusted volunteers, with whom we have been working from the start.

Why do we do this?

It’s very simple: if we don’t do it, nobody will!

Because of its geographical location, Nepal has to deal with natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods on a regular basis. The most recent examples of large-scale natural disasters are the 2015 earthquakes. As one of the poorest countries in the world, Nepal is sensitive to international crises such as the 2020 Corona pandemic. In these times, 4 Smiling Faces is ready to help the people in Nepal. We send emergency aid in the form of money to our valued volunteers, who use it to help the children and staff of our homes through difficult times.

With our emergency assistance, 4 Smiling Faces contributes to the realization of the United Nations (UN) SDG’s (Sustainable Development Goals).

The Nepali Woman and Children Service Society (NWCSS) orphanage is a home for up to 30 (half) orphans, former street children, foundlings, and children who live in adversity due to extreme poverty and/or from single-parent families. They have to deal with various health problems and issues such as addiction, abuse, neglect, or a combination of these problems.

In 2002 a group of women started the Nepalese Women and Children Service Society (NWCSS). Their goal was (and is) to help and support women and children in difficult situations. Their biggest project was starting and running a children’s home in Jorpati in Kathmandu. They started the NWCSS orphanage.

Since then the home moved to another location elsewhere in the neighborhood: at the time no more than a shell of a building. Thanks to the efforts of all involved and outside help it is increasingly becoming the safe haven it should be.

Net als de hele wereld is Nepal keihard getroffen door de Coronacrisis van 2020. Het land is maandenlang in volledige lockdown (24 maart t/m 22 juli). Velen werden werkloos en honger en ziekte kregen vrij spel. Ook waren de grenzen zijn hele periodes gesloten. Dat heeft de wijdverspreide armoede en honger enorm verergerd.

Boodschappen doen was alleen mogelijk tot 10 uur ’s morgens bij de dichtstbijzijnde winkel. Alleen voor (medische) noodgevallen mocht men op straat. Er waren zware controles door politie en leger en overtreders worden hard gestraft. Eten was schaars en werd steeds schaarser en heel veel duurder.

Buurland India blokkeerde geregeld de aanvoer van groente en fruit naar Nepal. Per saldo nam de hoeveelheid, variëteit en kwaliteit van de aangeboden verse producten in Nepal snel af, met alle nare gevolgen van dien. De prijzen van de eerste levensbehoeften stegen de pan uit en werden voor steeds meer mensen volstrekt onbetaalbaar.

Like the entire world, Nepal has been hit hard by the Corona crisis of 2020. The country has been in complete lockdown for months (March 24 to July 22). Many became unemployed and hunger and disease were given free rein. The borders were also closed many times during this period. hat has exacerbated widespread poverty and hunger.

Shopping was only possible until 10 am in the nearest store. People were only allowed on the street for (medical) emergencies. There were heavy checks by police and the army, and violators were punished severely. Food was scarce, and it was getting scarcer and much more expensive.

Neighbouring India regularly blocked the supply of fresh fruit and vegetables to Nepal. On balance, the quantity, variety, and quality of the fresh products offered in Nepal declined rapidly, with all the negative consequences that entailed. The prices of necessities soared and became completely unaffordable for more and more people.

Stichting 4 Smiling Faces helpt jongeren die de kindertehuizen die wij steunen (DRC Nepal en het NWCSS weeshuis) moeten verlaten. Ze moeten deze tehuizen verlaten omdat:

Onze hulp bestaat uit een studiebeurs (voor schoolgeld, uniformen, schoenen, boeken, leermaterialen en lunch) en als het nodig is de huur voor een veilige woonplek. We helpen alleen hen die niet kunnen terugvallen op familie (wat normaal is in Nepal) en die geen enkel vangnet hebben dat hen kan ondersteunen op weg naar een zelfstandig leven. Sommige van deze jongeren hebben bovendien een lichamelijke handicap of ziekte en hebben onze steun extra hard nodig.

Ondanks dat Nepal een van de armste landen ter wereld is, is verder leren na de middelbare school niet goedkoop. Zeker in relatie tot de gemiddeld zeer lage lonen. In onze visie is het de enige manier om deze zeer gemotiveerde jongelui verder te helpen.

4 Smiling Faces doet alles om deze jongeren de kans te geven op een beter leven en daarmee gedwongen huwelijken, gedwongen werk en (seksuele) slavernij te voorkomen. Want dat zijn allemaal reële gevaren in Nepal. De enige manier om daaraan te ontkomen is een goede opleiding, zodat de jongeren hun eigen weg gaan, hun eigen keuzes maken en zodoende de cirkel van armoede en wanhoop doorbreken. Dit geldt in het bijzonder voor kinderen met een ziekte of handicap of kinderen die anderszins leven in tegenwind (armoede, verlating/verstoting, verslavingsproblemen etc.)

Ontvangers kunnen geen steun bij ons aanvragen: dankzij goede relaties weten we precies wie hulp nodig heeft. We hebben een systeem waarmee we de voortgang van de ontvangers goed monitoren. Bovendien gaat er geen geld naar de ontvangers en/of hun familie: alle geldzaken worden afgehandeld door onze onvolprezen vrijwilligers met wie wij al jaren werken.

Over de studiekosten

Een vervolgopleiding na de middelbare school is in Nepal niet goedkoop. Gemiddeld gaat het om circa 2500 euro per jongere per jaar. Het grootste deel daarvan (circa 1450 euro) betreft school/collegegeld voor opleidingen van enige kwaliteit. Daarnaast is er geld nodig voor verplichte schooluniformen en schoeisel (circa 150 euro), boeken en lesmateriaal (circa 150 euro), vervoer (circa 75 euro), verplichte schoollunch (circa 75 euro) en een veilige plek om te leven (circa 600 euro). School/collegegeld en kamerprijzen stijgen sinds de aardbevingen van 2015. Bovendien kunnen jongeren met een handicap niet overal wonen: zo is een kamer op de derde etage niet toegankelijk wanneer je in een rolstoel zit. Liften zijn hier immers een zeldzaamheid.

Waarom doen wij dit? 

Het is heel simpel: als wij hen niet helpen, helpt niemand hen!

Met de studiebeurzen werkt 4 Smiling Faces werkt mee aan de realisatie van de SDG’s (Sustainable Development Goals of Duurzame Ontwikkelingsdoelen) van de Verenigde Naties (VN).

On April 25, 2015, Nepal was hit by a massive earthquake of 7.8. The epicentre was about 34 kilometres southeast of Lamjung. Nearly 10,000 people died and more than 15,000 were injured. Villages and cities have been wiped out, and many people have lost their homes and communities. Most of the victims fell in Nepal, but there were also victims in India, China, and Bangladesh.

This quake was the start of a whole series of thousands of violent aftershocks, which have caused even more deaths, injuries, and damage. Until the second big blow on May 12, 2015. That was 7.4 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was near the border with China.

Op 25 april 2015 is Nepal zwaar getroffen door een enorme aardbeving van 7,8. Het epicentrum lag niet ver van Kathmandu. Bij deze aardbeving zijn bijna 10.000 mensen omgekomen en ruim 15.000 gewond geraakt. Dorpen en steden zijn weggevaagd en vele mensen zijn hun huis en hun gemeenschap kwijtgeraakt. De meeste slachtoffers vielen in Nepal, maar daarnaast vielen ook slachtoffers in India, China en Bangladesh.

Deze beving was het begin van een hele serie van duizenden heftige naschokken, die nog meer doden, gewonden en schade hebben veroorzaakt. Tot de tweede grote klap op 12 mei 2015. Die was 7,4. Het  epicentrum lag nabij de grens met China. De  gevolgen van de aardbevingen zijn tot op de dag van vandaag zicht- en voelbaar in Nepal. Je hoeft niet ver te kijken om geruïneerde gebouwen te zien die door de aardbevingen/naschokken zijn ontstaan. Maar ook de niet zichtbare trauma’s liggen nog kort onder de oppervlakte.
