The DRC excersise/study room is fully repaired from the damage done by the earthquakes and back in full use, just in time for the monsoon to start. 🙂

De DRC Nepal is flink getroffen door de inmiddels meer dan 250 aardbevingen en naschokken sinds 25 april 2015. Gelukkig zijn kinderen en staf veilig. Het gebouw is echter op verschillende plekken enorm beschadigd. Een deel van die schade (aan de oefen/studie ruimte, die 4 Smiling Faces in 2014 kon realiseren) is inmiddels verholpen. De schade aan het hoofdgebouw wordt door anderen hersteld.

Daarnaast hebben we de benodigde noodhulp geleverd. Dat betekent geld voor allerhande zaken als voedsel, water, hygiënische zaken en andere benodigdheden.  Onze lokale vrijwilligers gebruiken dat geld voor aanschaf van alles wat er nodig is. Dat blijft vermoedelijk nog lange tijd de gang van zaken, omdat ook alle leveranciers met wie de DRC voorheen zaken deed zijn getroffen door de aardbeving. Dat geldt ook voor veel plaatselijke weldoeners.

Binnenkort is 4 Smiling Faces in Nepal om terplekke te bekijken wat er nog meer kan worden gedaan.

The DRC Nepal has been considerably affected by the to date more than 250 earthquakes and aftershocks since 25 April 2015. Fortunately, children and staff are safe. However, the building has suffered enormous damage in different places. Part of that damage (the exercise/study room, that 4SmilingFaces could realize in 2014) has been repaired. The damage to the main building will be restored by others.

In addition, we have provided the required emergency relief. That means money for all sorts of things like food, water, sanitary materials, and other items. Our local volunteers use that money to buy everything that is needed. We will probably have to do this long-term because all normal suppliers with whom the DRC formerly did business are affected by the quakes as well. This also applies to many local benefactors.

Soon, 4 Smiling Faces is in Nepal to see on the spot what more can and will be done.

Sinds enige tijd gaan alle DRC-kinderen naar school. Voorheen moesten sommige kinderen het doen met wat lessen in de DRC zelf, omdat er geen betaalbare school was waar zij terecht konden met hun zware beperkingen. Die situatie is gelukkig veranderd.

De kinderen gaan nu naar 5 verschillende scholen; sommige in de directe omgeving van het tehuis, anderen in verderaf gelegen delen van Kathmandu. Ze worden altijd gehaald en gebracht met schoolbussen. Van verschillende kinderen wordt de opleiding betaald door sponsoren (vaak voormalige vrijwilligers) uit diverse buitenlanden.

De scholen van de DRC kinderen lopen uiteen in kwaliteit en voorzieningen voor kinderen met beperkingen. Het liefst zou de DRC alle kinderen naar dezelfde school of hooguit twee of drie verschillende scholen van goede kwaliteit in de directe omgeving sturen, maar daarvoor is geen geld. Op schooldagen (zondag t/m vrijdag) is er na schooltijd een onderwijzer in de DRC om de kinderen te begeleiden/helpen bij het maken van huiswerk.

Sommige kinderen zitten op scholen die voor hen niet geschikt zijn, omdat er geen of te weinig voorzieningen of zelfs obstakels zijn voor kinderen met een beperking. (Denk aan een school op een heuvel die overal trappen heeft en jij zit in een rolstoel).  Feitelijk zitten ze dan gevangen in dat deel van de school waar ze wel in kunnen. Verder kunnen ze geen kant op. Deelnemen aan het schoolleven is niet of nauwelijks mogelijk. Deze kinderen moeten zo snel mogelijk naar andere scholen, waar ze wel uit de voeten kunnen en volledig kunnen deelnemen aan het schoolleven. Dat kost veel geld. Het mede mogelijk maken overstappen naar goed passende scholen is belangrijk voor 4 Smiling Faces.

Onderwijs en opleiding zijn een van de grootste kostenposten voor de DRC. Alle hulp en bijdragen op dit terrein zijn altijd zeer welkom!

For some time now, all DRC children go to school. Previously, some children had to make do with some lessons in the DRC itself, because there was no affordable school they could attend because of their severe disabilities. That situation has changed, fortunately.

The children now go to five different schools; some in the immediate vicinity of the home, others further away. They always travel to and from school by school buses. The training and education of several children is paid for by sponsors (often former volunteers) from various foreign countries.

The schools of the DRC children vary in quality and facilities for the disabled. The DRC would prefer to send all children to the same school or at most two or three different schools of good quality in the immediate area, but there is not enough money to do so.

On school days (Sunday to Friday) after school hours there is a remedial teacher in the DRC to assist the children with making their homework.

Some children are in schools that are not suitable for their needs because there are little or no facilities or even obstacles for children with disabilities. (Think of a school on a hill that has stairs everywhere and you’re in a wheelchair). In that case, they are trapped in a small part of the school that is accessible. They can’t get around anywhere. Participation in school life is hardly possible. These children need to attend other, better accessible and facilitated schools where they can get around and fully participate in school life. That costs a lot of money. Contributing to achieving a fitting school/child match is important to 4 Smiling Faces.

Education and training are one of the largest expenses for the DRC. Any help and contributions in this area are always very welcome!

DRC Nepal is gehuisvest in een buitenwijk van Kathmandu. Het gebouw waarin het tehuis is gevestigd, is nooit gebouwd voor de huisvesting van mensen met een handicap. Het pand heeft bovendien monumentale waarde en mag daarom niet zo maar worden verbouwd ten behoeve van de kinderen die er nu leven. Zo heeft het pand een levensgevaarlijke trap naar de eerste etage, waar valide mensen al moeite mee hebben. Maar helaas mag deze niet worden aangepast. Dat is ook een belangrijke reden waarom op de achtergrond hard wordt gewerkt aan de nieuwbouw van de DRC. Maar dat gaat nog jaren duren.

De oefen/fysiotherapie ruimte was altijd gevestigd op de eerste etage van de DRC. Het kamertje was echter veel te klein en voldeed voor geen meter. Dus kregen de kinderen die het nodig hebben niet voldoende oefening.

Voor een belangrijk deel van de kinderen die er moeten komen, was de ruimte niet zelfstandig te bereiken. Zij moesten worden gedragen, wat gezien de gevaarlijke trap zeker niet zonder risico’s is was drager en gedragene. Een oefenruimte op de begane grond is dan ook geen overbodige luxe.

Daar is er genoeg ruimte om een deel van de speelplaats dat niet werd gebruikt te overkappen en verbouwen tot grote binnenruimte: multifunctioneel te gebruiken als oefen/fysiotherapie en studie ruimte. Want studeren deden de kinderen voorheen zomer en winter buiten op de veranda. In de zomer wordt het daar echter bloedheet en in de herfst/winter/voorjaar is dat natuurlijk steen koud.

4 Smiling Faces heeft deze lang gekoesterde droom kunnen verwezenlijken. De bouw van de oefen/fysiotherapie en studie ruimte is eind februari 2014 gestart. De feestelijke ingebruikname was op 14 april 2014.

Sindsdien komt er iedere ochtend een fysiotherapeut om met de kinderen die dat nodig hebben oefeningen te doen. Dat helpt enorm met hun mobiliteit, pijnbeheersing en zelfredzaamheid.

DRC Nepal is housed on the outskirts of Kathmandu. The building was never built as an accommodation for people with disabilities. Also, the building has historical value and therefore cannot be renovated to fit the needs of the children now living there. For instance, the building has a dead scary staircase to the first floor that is even problematic for able-bodied people. Unfortunately, the staircase cannot be changed. This is one of the main reasons why in the background they work very hard to realise a complete new build of the DRC. But this will take years.

The exercise/physiotherapy room was always housed on the first floor of the DRC. However, the room is too small and doesn’t meet any of the requirements. Most children, who needed to use the room, couldn’t and didn’t get enough exercise. They have to be carried there, which isn’t without risk to the one who is doing the carrying and the one who is being carried. An exercise room on the ground floor, therefore, is not a luxury but a necessity.

On the ground floor, there is enough space to build a new room on part of the playground that is not being used at the moment. The space can be a multifunctional room for exercise and physical therapy and as a study area. Because of summer and winter, the children now study outside on the porch. In the summer, however, it is very hot and in the fall/winter/spring is obviously stone-cold.

4SmilingFaces has realized this dream. The construction of the exercise/study room started end of February 2014 and the room was officially and festively inaugurated on April 14, 2014.

Since then it has been in full use: every morning there are sessions for the kids who need it with the physiotherapist. Their mobility is a lot better because of the regular training, and so is their pain management and their self-reliance.

Bijna de helft van de kinderen in DRC Nepal kan of mag niet naar huis of familie om het Dashain festival te vieren. Dat is het belangrijkste religieuze festival in Nepal en traditiegetrouw de tijd om de familie banden aan te trekken en vriendschappen te bevestigen. De achterblijvers zijn dan ook bedroefd, te meer daar vakantie voor hen vooral wachten en vervelen betekent.

Daar brengt 4 Smiling Faces dit jaar verandering in door hen mee te nemen op een uitje naar een belangrijke plek in Nepal: het Kailashnath Mahadev Statue, het grootste beeld van Hindoe god Lord Shiva ter wereld.

Voor de kinderen is dit niet alleen een geheel nieuwe herinnering, maar ook een hoogtepunt in de vakantie dat hun verveling doorbreekt. Zo hebben zij straks ook wat te vertellen als de andere kinderen terugkeren van familiebezoeken na het festival. Dat gun je ze toch.

Almost half of the children in the DRC Nepal can’t or may not go home or visit family to celebrate the Dashain festival. That is the most important religious festival in Nepal and traditionally the time to reconnect with family and confirm friendships. The children are sad about this because it’s easy to get bored of waiting during the holidays.

4 Smiling Faces wants to change that this year by taking the ones who stayed behind on a day trip to an important place in Nepal: the Kailashnath Mahadev Statue, the world’s largest statue of the Hindu god Lord Shiva.

For the children, this is not only a whole new memory, but also a highlight of the holidays that will break the boredom. So when the others return, they will also have a story to tell. That’s something you wish for them!

In 2008 4 Smiling Faces installed a solar power system in the DRC Nepal to provide hot water for the showers. Two years later we installed a groundwater well and -pump so expensive and rare drinking water can be used only for food and drinking. Anno 2013 both systems are in need of minor repairs and maintenance because extreme weather has caused damage. 4SmilingFaces is obviously happy to make this possible.

In 2008 heeft 4 Smiling Faces een zonne-energie systeem aangelegd om de DRC Nepal van heet water te voorzien voor de douches. Twee jaar later hebben we een grondwaterput en -pomp aangelegd, zodat kostbaar en onregelmatige geleverd drinkwater uitsluitend voor eten en drinken kan worden gebruikt. Beide systeem hebben anno 2013 kleine reparaties en onderhoud nodig, omdat er schade is opgelopen door onder andere extreem slecht weer. Dat maakt 4 Smiling Faces uiteraard graag mogelijk.

A friend has recently visited Nepal, where she supports several children’s homes and projects. This time she also visited the DRC Nepal.

During her visit, she made it possible that the paving in the small DRC garden was equalized so children in a wheelchair could also use it and visit the little temple that’s there.

She also made it possible for the front gate of the DRC to be renewed and made much nicer.  Now visitors know that they have entered a beautiful, fun, and happy world.

Een vriendin is onlangs op bezoek geweest in Nepal, waar zij al enkele jaren diverse projecten ondersteunt. Deze keer is zij ook op bezoek geweest in de DRC Nepal.

Tijdens dat bezoek heeft zij het mogelijk gemaakt dat het plaveisel in het piepkleine tuintje van de DRC is geëgaliseerd, zodat ook kinderen in een rolstoel er gebruik van kunnen maken om bij het tempeltje te komen.

Daarnaast heeft zij ook het hek van de DRC laten vernieuwen en opfleuren. Nu weten bezoekers dat ze een mooie, vrolijke en blije wereld betreden.

Until now the DRC Nepal has done without a disabled toilet and ditto bathroom. While the home is a home for children with various physical disabilities. A disabled toilet/bathroom is certainly not a luxury.

In the past, it seemed impossible to build a fully adapted disabled toilet in the DRC, since there was no room. However further investigation has shown that there is space not only for a disabled toilet but for the entire bathroom to be renovated.

Thus, the bathroom will be a lot bigger (so there is more room to move), fully equipped with anti-slip tiles, there will be handles everywhere and other facilities that will make the use by children with disabilities easier and above all safer.
