Monsoondisaster
Mother Nature is at it again and strikes hard and relentlessly in Nepal; this time with unimaginable monsoon rains. Huge amounts of water in a short time. The Kathmandu Valley and the capital Kathmandu have been hit really hard.
For us, the most important thing is that the homes, the foster family and after-school care are safe; they are just high enough to keep their feet dry (at least so far).
Elsewhere in the city and Valley, people are less fortunate: people are still missing and all roads to and from Kathmandu, among other places, are impassable due to landslides and floods. Many people have lost everything. And the danger has not yet passed, because more rain is expected and therefore also more landslides and floods.
Due to all the blocked roads, the supply of vegetables, fruit and other food and materials to the city has come to a complete standstill. It is unclear how long this will last. This will cause problems in the short term: increasing shortages and rising prices. It is already happening.
4 Smiling Faces helps in good times and bad. We provide food (rice, flour, oil, etc.), hygiene materials and medication. The weather forecast for the coming days can mean anything: less rain, but more is also possible.
Whatever happens, the risk of more/larger landslides and floods remains high and increases with every raindrop. The supply routes will not simply be reopened. The shortages will increase and the prices will continue to rise.
The homes that we support are still well stocked for the time being. The families of the children in the after school program have no safety net. In many cases, they are day laborers who are currently unable to work, so they earn nothing with all the consequences that entails. Will you help us to help them? 🙏
