In 2022 vroegen we in onze fondsaanvragen speciale aandacht voor Sachina, een veelbelovende pupil van de buitenschoolse opvang SHCOP. Ze kon en wilde dolgraag verder studeren, maar haar familie kon dat onmogelijk financieren. Gelukkig zijn we er in geslaagd om voldoende fondsen te werven en kan Sachina in 2023 starten met haar vervolgopleiding: PCL Verpleegkunde.

Sachina en haar zus Sabina staan symbool voor veel meer meisjes en jongens die we nu al helpen met een beurs of die we heel graag zouden willen helpen. De zusjes zijn al jaren vaste bezoekers van de buitenschoolse opvang SHCOP, die we ondersteunen. Inmiddels zijn ze daar vooral actief als enthousiaste vrijwilligers.

De meiden kwamen indertijd naar de opvang omdat het dorp waar ze zijn opgegroeid tijdens de aardbevingen van 2015 volledig is vernietigd. Als door een wonder hebben zij, hun moeder en broertje dat overleeft. Hun vader helaas niet. Ze zijn gevlucht naar Kathmandu, waar het leven voor hen niet gemakkelijk was en is. Het gezin is arm en in Nepal is er geen ondersteuning voor alleenstaande ouders. 

Gelukkig was er plaats voor de zusjes en hun broertje bij de buitenschoolse opvang waar ze de nodige ondersteuning (opvang, voeding, aandacht, huiswerkbegeleiding) kregen. Mede daarom hebben de meiden hun middelbare schoolopleiding op glorieuze wijze kunnen afronden.  

Sachina en Sabina zijn hele slimme meiden die leren leuk vinden. Ze gaan dan dan ook heel graag verder studeren. Niet alleen voor hen zelf, maar vooral ook om hun moeder en broertje te ondersteunen en hun leven te verbeteren. Als ze klaar zijn met studeren, gaan ze aan het werk en willen ze bijdragen aan de vervolgopleiding van hun broertje en het leven van hun moeder wat makkelijker maken. Paying it forward!

This year, one of our scholarship recipients completed his training: Tashi. He is now a Bachelor of Hotel Management. He currently working in a 5-star hotel in Dubai, where he also completed his final internship. Tashi’s long-term plan is to come back to Nepal, support his father and possibly start his own hotel.

Dit jaar heeft een van onze beursontvangers zijn opleiding afgerond: Tashi. Hij is nu Bachelor of Hotelmanagement. Op dit moment werkt hij in een 5 sterren hotel in Dubai, waar hij ook zijn slotstage heeft gelopen. Tashi’s lange termijnplan is om terug te komen naar Nepal, zijn vader te ondersteunen en mogelijk zijn eigen hotel te starten.

Rashmi completed the PCL Civil Engineering course in the spring of 2023 and is now gaining work experience in Kathmandu. After one or two years she continues for her bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.

Rashmi heeft in het voorjaar van 2023 de PCL-opleiding Civil Engineering afgerond en doet nu werkervaring op in Kathmandu. Na een of twee jaar gaat ze door voor haar bachelor in Civil Engineering.

The sisters tell more about their background and what their lives would be like without our help and that of Asha & Devendra, our trusted volunteers in Nepal. They live together in a room on the ground floor of their house, because their own house is too small for everyone. But luckily there is good daily contact with the family, who literally live around the corner.

With great thanks to the Pro Juventute Support Fund Foundation, Sabina started the Computer Applications Bachelor’s degree program in October 2023, after successfully completing the entrance exam.

De zusjes vertellen meer over hun achtergrond en hoe hun leven eruit zien zonder onze hulp en die van Asha & Devendra, onze gewaardeerde vrijwilligers in Nepal. Zij wonen samen in een kamer op de begane grond van hun huis, omdat hun eigen huis te klein is voor 5 personen. Maar gelukkig is er dagelijks goed contact met de familie, die letterlijk om de hoek wonen.

Met grote dank aan de Stichting Steunfonds Pro Juventute is Sabina in oktober 2023 gestart met de Bacheloropleiding Computer Applications, nadat ze het toelatingsexamen met goed gevolg heeft afgelegd.

Gita has passed her Teacher License exam and can now work as a High School teacher. She can combine that with the master’s program that she will start later this year. Her ultimate goal is and remains to work in government and thus contribute to a better Nepal for everyone, while securing a good future for herself.

Gita heeft haar Teacher Liscence exam gehaald en kan nu aan het werk als High School teacher. Dat laat zich goed combineren met de masteropleiding die ze later dit jaar start. Haar uiteindelijk doel is en blijft om aan de slag te gaan bij overheid en zo bij te dragen aan een beter Nepal voor iedereen en een mooie toekomst voor haarzelf.

In 2021, we requested special attention in our fundraising applications for Sabina, a promising pupil of the after-school program SHCOP. She could and desperately wanted to continue her studies, but her family could not possibly make that happen. Fortunately, we have managed to raise sufficient funds and Sabina has now started the extended school program Plus 2 Business Management.

Sabina and her sister Sachina represent many more girls and boys whom we already help with a scholarship or whom we would really like to help. The sisters have been regular visitors to the after-school program, which we support, for years. They are now mainly active there as enthusiastic volunteers.

The girls came to the SHCOP in 2015 because the village where they grew up was completely destroyed during the earthquakes. Miraculously, they, their mother and little brother survived. Unfortunately, their father did not. They fled to Kathmandu, where life was and is still not easy for them. The family is poor and in Nepal there is no support for single parents.

Fortunately, there was room for the sisters and their brother at the after-school program where they received the necessary support (care, nutrition, attention, homework guidance). Partly because of this, the girls were able to complete their secondary school education in a glorious manner.

This year, two of our scholarship recipients graduated: Gita and Nisha. Gita is now a Bachelor of Business Studies and is looking for a job as an accountant. Nischa has finished the extended school program Plus2 Management and is now looking for work as a secretary. The job search is currently difficult – if not impossible – due to Covid 19. In the meantime, both do all kinds of volunteer work.

Dit jaar hebben twee van onze beursontvangers hun studie afgerond: Gita en Nisha. Gita is nu Bachelor of Busines Studies. Ze zoekt een baan als accountant en doorloopt het traject om bij de overheid aan de slag te gaan. Nischa is klaar met het verlengde schoolprogramma Plus2 Management en zoekt nu werk als secretaresse. De zoektocht naar werk is op het ogenblik er moeilijk – zo niet onmogelijk – door Covid 19. In de tussentijd doen beiden allerhande vrijwilligerswerk.

Wij zijn trots op jullie.

The 4 Smiling Faces Foundation helps young people who have to leave the children’s homes we support (DRC Nepal and NWCSS orphanage) because:

• they reach 18 years of age and are legally adults,
• finished high school,
• may have a physical handicap or illness.

Our help consists of a scholarship (for school fees, uniforms, shoes, books, school materials, and tiffin) and if necessary the rent for a safe place to live. We only help those who can’t rely on family (which is the norm in Nepal) and have no safety net to support them towards an independent life.

Even though Nepal is one of the worlds poorest countries, getting a further education after your School Leaving Certificate is not cheap. Especially considering the very low wages. We think this is the only way to help these youngsters get a good start in life.

4 Smiling Faces wants to do everything in its power to give these young people a chance for a better life, prevent forced marriages; forced labour, and (sexual) slavery. These are all real dangers in Nepal.

The only way out is a good education, so the youngsters can build their own lives, make their own choices and so doing, break the circle of poverty and despair. This goes especially for kids that are ill, have a handicap, and/or any other difficulties (like poverty, abandonment, addiction, etc).

Recipients can’t apply for our help; thanks to inside connections, we know exactly who needs our help. We have a system in place for monitoring their progress. Also, no money goes to either the recipients and/or their families: all money-related matters are dealt with by our very trusted volunteers, with whom we have been working from the start.

Why do we do this?

It’s very simple: if we don’t do it, nobody will!

With our support of the SHCOP, 4 Smiling Faces contributes to the realization of the United Nations (UN) SDG’s (Sustainable Development Goals).

Because of its geographical location, Nepal has to deal with natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods on a regular basis. The most recent examples of large-scale natural disasters are the 2015 earthquakes. As one of the poorest countries in the world, Nepal is sensitive to international crises such as the 2020 Corona pandemic. In these times, 4 Smiling Faces is ready to help the people in Nepal. We send emergency aid in the form of money to our valued volunteers, who use it to help the children and staff of our homes through difficult times.
