The DRC kitchen has been feeding 55+ children and their carers every day for years. The very tasty and nutritious food is prepared on a 2-burner stove. After years of loyal service, it can no longer be repaired and needs to be replaced.
What is the solution?
The solution is to purchase and install a new three-burner stove and the construction of the necessary chimney.

A new, safe stove with an extra burner that makes cooking faster and better for even more people.
De DRC-keuken voed al jaren dagelijks 55+ kinderen en hun begeleiders. Het zeer smakelijke en voedzame eten wordt klaargemaakt op een 2pitsfornuis. Na jaren trouwe dienst is dat niet meer te repareren en aan vervanging toe.
Wat is de oplossing?
De oplossing is aanschaf en installatie van een nieuw fornuis met drie pitten en de aanleg van de daarvoor noodzakelijke schoorsteen.
Wat is het resultaat?
Een nieuw, veilig fornuis met een extra pit waardoor er sneller en beter kan worden gekookt voor nog meer mensen.
In 2018, as one of our first projects in the DRC, we installed a solar system for the hot water supply; the children no longer had to take a cold shower. Since then, repairs and maintenance have been carried out, and damage from the 2015 earthquakes was repaired. In 2022 the system no longer functioned properly, the children were taking cold showers again.
What is the solution?
The solution is carrying out major maintenance and repairs.
What is the result?
The solar system is working as it should again and the hot water supply has been restored. No more cold showers.
In 2008 hebben we (als een van onze eerste projecten) een zonne-energie systeem aangelegd in de DRC, zodat de kinderen voortaan een warme douche konden nemen. Na de aardbevingen van 2015 hebben we het systeem laten repareren. Anno 2022 zijn enkele van de buizen kapot en daardoor werkt het systeem niet goed meer. De kinderen staan dus weer onder een koude douche.
Wat is de oplossing?
De oplossing is het aanbrengen van enkele nieuwe buizen en nog wat kleine reparaties en upgrades.
Wat is het resultaat?
Het resultaat is dat het solar systeem weer werkt zoals het hoort en de kinderen weer een warme douche kunnen nemen.
Het pleisterwerk in de kinderkamer van de DRC is verouderd, vervallen, lelijk en onvoldoende. Behalve dat het er niet uitziet en de indruk geeft van gebrek aan zorg, is het ook onveilig: vocht komt door de muren naar binnen. Dat is niet alleen oncomfortabel, maar veroorzaakt ook een slechte atmosfeer met vocht, muffigheid en schimmel. Altijd ongezond, maar zeker als het om kwetsbare kinderen gaat.
Voor het pleisterwerk werd aangebracht zag het er zo uit.
Wat is de oplossing?
De oplossing is het aanbrengen van vochtwerend pleisterwerk aan de binnen- en buitenkant.

Wat is het resultaat?
Het nieuwe pleisterwerk zorgt ervoor dat het vochtprobleem in de kinderkamers, de muffe lucht, de schimmel en de bedompte atmosfeer verdwenen zijn. Een algehele verbetering van het binnenklimaat in de kinderkamers en daar vaart iedereen wel bij.
The plasterwork in the children’s rooms of the DRC is outdated, worn, ugly, and inadequate. In addition to looking unsightly and giving the impression of lack of care, it is also unsafe: moisture enters through the walls. This is not only uncomfortable but also creates an ominous atmosphere with damp, musty air and mold. Always unhealthy, especially when it is a space for vulnerable children.

The solution is to apply moisture-resistant plaster on the inside and out.

What is the result?
The new plasterwork removes the moisture problem from the children’s rooms, the stale air, mold, and stuffy atmosphere. An overall improvement of the indoor climate in the children’s rooms and from that, everyone benefits.

One of the first things that 4SmilingFaces did in the DRC in 2008 was the paving of the playground, so everyone could get around more easely. Till then, there was a very uneven brick floor, which was very uncomfortable and unsafe for children with various walking difficulties. Nine years later the paving is full of cracks and potholes, mainly caused by the earthquakes of 2015.
Along the long side of the play area, there is a planter which actually only takes up space. Nothing really grows in there.
What is the solution?
The solution is the complete renovation of the paving and removal of the empty, space-eating planter.
What is the result?
The result is a smooth concrete floor without obstacles, that is usable and safe for all kids, no matter what their handicap is. Along the whole length, the playground will also be 50 centimeters wider because of te removal of the planter. And with 55 kids you can never have enough room to play.
Een van de eerste dingen die 4 SmilingFaces in 2008 heeft opgepakt in de DRC is het plaveien van de speelplaats, zodat iedereen goed uit de voeten kan. Voor die tijd lag er een heel onregelmatige klinkervloer, die het leven van de kinderen met diverse loopproblemen erg ongemakkelijk maakte. Het plaveisel zit na 9 jaar vol met barsten en gaten, vooral veroorzaakt door de aardbevingen van 2015.
Langs de lange zijde van de speelplaats is er een plantenbak die eigenlijk alleen maar ruimte in neemt. Er groeit niets.
Wat is de oplossing?
De oplossing is een fikse opknapbeurt voor het plaveisel en verwijdering van de lege, slechts ruimte innemende plantenbak.
Wat is het resultaat?
Het resultaat is een egale betonnen vloer zonder obstakels, die bruikbaar is voor alle kinderen, ongeacht hun beperking. De speelplek wordt over de hele lengte bovendien 50 centimeter breder door verwijdering van de plantenbak. En met 55 kinderen is dat natuurlijk pure winst.
Het Disabled Rehabilitation Center Nepal (DRC Nepal) is een tehuis voor 35 kinderen*) met een ziekte en/of een lichamelijke en soms ook verstandelijke beperking en/of levend in afgelegen gebieden zonder voorzieningen. Het tehuis staat in Kathmandu’s buitenwijk Gorkana. Het DRC complex ligt aan de voet van een heuvel en aan de oever van de Bagmati Rivier.
In de DRC wonen kinderen in de leeftijd van 4 tot en met 17 jaar. Zeventig procent van de kinderen heeft een lichamelijke beperking of ziekte, ook zijn er enkele met (ook) een verstandelijke beperking. De rest van hen heeft een achtergrond van armoede en/of moeilijke sociale omstandigheden. Integratie is het sleutelwoord.
De DRC is opgericht in 2002. Het is een non-profit, non-governmental humanitaire organisatie die is geregistreerd bij het District Administration Office in Kathmandu, Nepal (Registratie nummer: 856/2000) en is verbonden met de Social Welfare Council en de National Federation of Disabled Nepal.
*) Voor corona waren er 55 kinderen in de DRC; de vermindering van het aantal is in eerste instantie door de overheid opgelegd in het kader van de bestrijding van het coronavirus. Nadien zijn de regels voor en het toezicht op kindertehuizen verscherpt en verbeterd (en dat is een hele goede zaak), waardoor er nog minder kinderen dan voorheen kunnen worden opgevangen. Momenteel werkt DRC aan de realisatie van nieuwbouwplannen waarin ruimte en voorzieningen zijn voor 55 tot 60 kinderen met een ziekte of handicap.
Accommodatie
Dit is wat er is in de DRC:
Er zijn 3 toiletten en 2 warme douches (dankzij het zonne-energie systeem dat 4 Smiling Faces heeft gerealiseerd) voor 55 kinderen en vier medewerkers.
Er zijn 3 slaapruimten.
Op de begane grond is een grote overdekte veranda die tevens zomer en winter dienst doet als klaslokaal, hang plek, tv kijk ruimte.
Op de begane grond is ook de oefen- annex studieruimte (gerealiseerd door 4 Smiling Faces).
Er is een aangepaste badkamer die veilig is voor gebruik door kinderen met uiteenlopende handicaps (gerealiseerd door 4 Smiling Faces).
Er is een aangepaste keuken waar iedereen veilig kan leren koken (gerealiseerd door 4 Smiling Faces).
In de slaapruimten is niet genoeg ruimte voor een eigen bed voor iedereen. Dus velen delen een bed, wat overigens heel gewoon is in Nepal.
De meeste kinderen hebben een tas of een klein kistje voor privé spulletjes.
De DRC is een enkel steens gebouw zonder verwarming.
Filosofie
De filosofie van het centrum is integratie. Door samen te leven leren kinderen met en zonder beperkingen dat iedereen gelijk is. Dat is een noodzakelijke les in Nepal, waar mensen met een beperking vaak niet goed worden behandeld of gesteund.
De kinderen zonder beperkingen in de DRC hebben een moeilijke achtergrond door armoede, sociale omstandigheden (bijvoorbeeld eenouder gezinnen, verwaarlozing, verslaving) of komen uit zeer afgelegen gebieden. Hun families zijn niet in staat om goed voor hen te zorgen. De meeste kinderen gaan eens per jaar naar huis, maar sommigen zijn vanwege hun beperking verstoten door hun familie en in enkele gevallen is de familie onbekend en dus onvindbaar.
Het is opmerkelijk om te zien hoe zelfredzaam de kinderen zijn. Ze kunnen praktisch alles zelf doen en als dat niet gaat, helpen ze elkaar. Zonder te klagen.
Vrije tijd
De DRC-kinderen spenderen hun vrije tijd meestal kletsend, studerend en/of spelend op hun bed, op de veranda, op de speelplaats of een verderop gelegen veld. Prima als het lekker weer is. Maar tijdens de koude winters of natte moessons is het minder leuk om buiten te spelen.

Met onze ondersteuning van de DRC werkt 4 Smiling Faces werkt mee aan de realisatie van de SDG’s (Sustainable Development Goals of Duurzame Ontwikkelingsdoelen) van de Verenigde Naties (VN).
The Disabled Rehabilitation Center Nepal (DRC Nepal) is a home for 26 children*) with an illness and/or physical and sometimes intellectual disability and/or living in remote areas without facilities. The home is located in Kathmandu’s suburb of Gorkana at the foot of a hill and on the banks of the Bagmati River.
The DRC Nepal is home to children aged 4 to 17 years. Seventy percent of the children have a physical disability and there are also some with (also) a mental disability. The rest of them have a background of poverty and/or difficult social conditions. Integration is the key.
Established in 2002, the Disabled Rehabilitation Centre Nepal is a non-profit, non-governmental humanitarian organization registered with the District Administration Office in Kathmandu, Nepal (Registration No: 856/2000) and affiliated with the Social Welfare Council and National Federation of Disabled Nepal.
*) Before corona there were 55 children in the DRC; the reduction in the number was initially imposed by the government in the context of the fight against the coronavirus. Since then, the rules for and supervision of children’s homes have been tightened and improved (which is a really good thing), as a result of which even fewer children can be cared for than before. DRC is currently working on the realization of new construction plans with space and facilities for 55 to 60 children with an illness or disability.

Philosophy
The philosophy of the center is integration. Both children with and without physical disabilities learn that all men are equal. This is a necessary lesson to teach in Nepalese society, where people with disabilities, in general, are not treated/supported well. It is therefore important that both groups live together so they can see and experience this for themselves.
The non-disabled children in the DRC have a difficult background of poverty, social conditions (for example one-parent families, neglect), or come from very remote areas. Their families are not able to take proper care of them. Most children go home once a year, but some children have been disowned by their families because of their disabilities.
It is remarkable to see how self-reliant the children are. They can practically do everything themselves and if that does not work, they help each other. Without complaining.
Leisure time
The DRC children spend most of their free time chatting, studying, and/or playing on their beds, on the veranda, or on a nearby field. That’s fine when the weather is nice. But when it is cold in winter or during the monsoon, it is less fun. There is no heating in the DRC.
