4SmilingFaces heeft de aanleg van het riool van het NWCSS weeshuis en de aansluiting daarvan op het hoofdriool gefinancierd. Voorheen loosde het weeshuis op een open riool dat door de tuin stroomde. Nooit goed natuurlijk maar zeker niet met zoveel kinderen in de buurt.

De aanleg van het hoofdriool in de wijk is begin 2010 afgerond, zodat de omliggende huizen één voor één kunnen worden aangesloten. De aanleg en aansluiting van het riool van het NWCSS weeshuis is uitgevoerd in oktober/december 2010.

4SmilingFaces financed the construction of the sewage system for the NWCSS orphanage and its connection to the main sewage system in the neighbourhood   Previously the orphanage only had and open sewage that flowed through the garden. Never a good thing, especially with children around.

The construction of the main sewage system in the district was completed early 2010, so the surrounding houses could be connected one by one. The construction and connection of the NWCSS orphanage sewage system was done in October/December that year.

Dankzij een bevriende relatie bij Philips Licht hebben we in maart 2010 twintig gloednieuwe zonne-energie lampen in Nepal gekregen. Deze lampen zijn speciaal gemaakt voor landen waar elektriciteit een probleem is. Zoals Nepal waar in de droge tijd dagelijks urenlange stroomonderbrekingen zijn.

De lampen zijn verdeeld tussen de DRC Nepal en het NWCSS weeshuis. Dankzij het licht kunnen de kinderen in beide tehuizen tijdens de stroomonderbrekingen gewoon door lezen en leren. Voorheen gingen ze dan heel vroeg naar bed.

Thanks to a dear relation at Philips Light we got twenty brand new solar-powered lanterns in March 2010. This product is specially made for countries where electricity is a problem. Like Nepal in the dry season, when there are daily power outages that last hours on end.

We divided the lanterns between the DRC Nepal and the NWCSS orphanage  With the lanterns the children in both homes can go on reading and studying even when the power is off. Before they could only go to bed very early.

De aanleg van de grondwater put en pompinstallatie bij de DRC Nepal is voltooid in april/mei 2010. Het grondwater wordt gebruikt voor alle niet eten & drinken gerelateerde activiteiten zoals het doorspoelen van toiletten, douchen, wassen van kleren en het sproeien van de tuin.

In de droge tijd is drinkwater schaars in de Kathmandu Vallei. Leverantie aan huishoudens is op z’n zachtst gezegd onregelmatig. Soms komt er 2 weken geen vers drinkwater…

Huizen – en ook de DRC – hebben één of meerdere grote voorraadtanks voor de opslag van drinkwater: zodra er wordt geleverd, vult iedereen die helemaal op. Maar je weet nooit of de leverantie lang genoeg duurt om je tanks te vullen. En bovendien daalt de waterdruk als iedereen op hetzelfde moment zijn of haar tanks vult.

Zuinig zijn met drinkwater is natuurlijk altijd goed, maar in de Kathmandu Vallei absoluut noodzakelijk. In de droge tijd kun je nooit zomaar een douche nemen, zomaar kleren wassen (wat in Nepal op de hand gebeurd), nooit het water laten stromen als je je tanden poetst of er op rekenen dat je het toilet kunt doorspoelen.

Met de aanleg van de grondwater installatie bespaart de DRC enorme hoeveelheden drinkwater. Ze doen veel langer met dezelfde hoeveelheid. Het tehuis is daarmee minder afhankelijk van (politieke) ontwikkelingen in het land. Bovendien is het ook een goede ontwikkeling uit oogpunt van hygiëne en het milieu.

The construction of the groundwater well and pump in the DRC Nepal was completed in April/May 2010. The groundwater is used for all non food & drink related activities such as flushing the toilets, showers, washing clothes and watering the garden. Drinking water is a rare commodity in the Kathmandu Valley. During the dry season the supply to households is erratic to say the least. Sometimes there is no fresh drinking water for two weeks!

Houses and also the DRC have one or more large storage tanks for drinking water: as soon as water comes, everyone fills up the tanks because no one never knows when the next delivery will take place. And you never know if there is enough water to fill your tanks. The same goes for the water pressure, because that will drop when everybody fills up their tanks at the same time.

Saving drinking water is always a good thing, but in the Kathmandu Valley it is a necessity. Especially in the dry season. You can never just take a shower, just wash your clothes (which in Nepal is mainly done by hand), let the water flow when you brush your teeth, or take for granted that the toilet will flush.

Because of the groundwater well and pump the DRC can save an enormous amount of drinking water, that they now only use for drinking and preparing food. So they can do much longer with the drinking water in the storage tanks. Therefore they are more independent of the (political) developments in the country. And it is good for the environment and hygienic reasons.
