Like the entire world, Nepal is hit hard by the Corona crisis. The country has been in full lockdown for weeks and borders have been closed, exacerbating widespread poverty and causing enormous hunger. People are allowed to shop at the nearest shop until 10 am and only go out on the street for (medical) emergencies. There is heavy police control and violators are punished severely. Food is scarce and is becoming increasingly scarce and even more expensive. Neighboring India is blocking the supply of fresh fruit and vegetables to Nepal. On balance, the quantity, variety and quality of the fresh products on offer in Nepal are declining rapidly, with all the unpleasant consequences that entails. The prices of basic necessities are rising and are becoming completely unaffordable for more and more people.
