(Sorry, it’s only in Dutch, but you probarbly get the drift) Naturally, for my children in Nepal, and especially to emphasize that the consequences of the disaster extend far beyond the borders of the disaster zone. Please, keep helping; Nepal and the Nepalese people desperately need our support now and in the future.
These are difficult times for Nepal, and especially for the Nepalese. The tsunami disaster has damaged, swept away, and/or destroyed so much: people, homes, businesses, schools, villages, infrastructure… more than a week later, the human suffering and all forms of damage are still barely comprehensible. Amidst all the misery, one could almost forget that beautiful things are still happening; survivors are still being found (https://nos.nl/l/2629604). People who were reported missing without knowing it are being found. Or the school principal who, through decisive action, was able to bring all his students and staff to safety in time (https://nos.nl/l/2629162). That gives hope these days.
That is exactly what we at 4 Smiling Faces do for the children and the people around them whom we have been supporting in Nepal for years. With some help from us, they get so much further, now more than ever. For although they fortunately live outside the disaster area, they certainly feel the consequences of it. Food shortages are increasing, prices are rising, and people are losing their jobs because roads leading to the disaster area are closed. 4 Smiling Faces wants to stand alongside them and help, even now. The flash flood in Nepal is setting the country back completely. After more than 10 years of the devastating earthquakes of 2015 and the pandemic, it seemed the country and its people were finally getting back on the road to recovery… Wednesday’s tidal wave is a brutal reset back in time. 😥 Many have drowned. Villages have been wiped out. Farmland is flooded. Infrastructure is irreparably damaged. The social and economic consequences are enormous, in the short and long term.
A disaster like this has unimaginable consequences for the immediate victims, but also for the rest of the country. The supply of food to cities is cutting off. Tourism revenue is disappearing. Businesses are going bankrupt. People are becoming unemployed. The cycle of poverty and despair is growing ever larger, suffocating and destroying.
4 Smiling Faces cannot help everyone, but we all can help someone. It is now more important than ever to reach out a helping hand. Providing immediate emergency aid in the disaster zone is the strength and expertise of major charities and government bodies. Our “superpower” lies in supporting the children, the people around them, and the homes where they grow up in the Kathmandu Valley. Although they were not directly struck by the devastating floods, many still live in fear regarding the fate of family and friends with whom contact has not yet been re-established.
Disasters like this never affect only the immediate victims; they also cause despair and misery far beyond the disaster zone—both in the short and long term. The staggering rise in prices alone makes life for Nepal’s predominantly poor population far more difficult than it already was. You have likely seen the harrowing images of the flash flood disaster in Nepal; the scale, scope, and consequences are becoming increasingly apparent. Thankfully, the children and the care homes supported by *4 Smiling Faces in Nepal* have not been directly affected. However, several children have family in the disaster zone and do not yet know the full extent of their relatives’ situation. 😥💔
A direct consequence of this disaster is already being felt in the Kathmandu Valley, where our care homes are located: prices are skyrocketing. The affected region is a major source of food for the city, and supply lines have come to a complete standstill; given the infrastructure damage, it is highly uncertain how quickly supplies can be restored. Initial reports are not promising. 😥
It is expected that in the coming weeks and months, many people from the affected area will come—or be brought—to the city and will require shelter. It is quite possible that some children will end up in our care facilities, just as happened after the earthquakes of 2015.
The most pressing issue right now is that food shortages in the city—much like prices—are escalating rapidly. Our care homes lack the financial buffer to get through the coming period without assistance. That is why we are asking for your help; together, we can support our children (and the people around them) and show them they are not alone. They desperately need our help to get through this difficult time.
